“The learning gave me so much confidence. It enabled me to have a career and progress in this career.”

Education helps former trainee provide a better life for his family

Team Leader Jerome Prosser’s learning journey in the cleaning sector has enabled him to secure a promotion, make a difference in his job and provide for his young family.

Jerome was an agency worker when he applied in 2018 for the trainee programme at Birmingham City Council, with the aim of developing a career.

Recognising that he needed to expand his knowledge, Jerome went on to complete the apprenticeship programme, a Level 2 qualification in Infection Prevention and Control, and Practical Skills Training.

Jerome, who delivers a cleaning service for the tenants of his building, achieved job security as a caretaker and then a promotion to a supervisory position.

He explained: “I have a young family and, practically, I needed secure employment but wanted something that my family could be proud of. I wanted to be able to make a difference in what I did. I knew that to secure a role I needed to do more learning.

“The learning gave me so much confidence. It enabled me to have a career and progress in this career. Economically, it has contributed to a better life for me, and I am able to provide a better life for my family.”

“As a profession, cleaning is not really recognised but it is the most important activity that takes place in any building. By cleaning correctly, you are contributing to the sustainability of a building.

“I know that I am providing a vital service to my tenants and this was especially relevant whilst we were going through the pandemic. Making sure best practice was followed, keeping my team safe whilst working. I also know that I and my team contributed to creating a safe environment during a difficult time. “
